The tunes we carry with us are part of a communal, unconscious language. We share them with the communities we belong to, and the people we know and meet. Like dreams, they are both part of what we are, and the values we hold in common. An aspect of our shared cultural, and multicultural identity.
In my role as Musician in Residence at St. Mary and St. Nicholas, I have been gathering tunes from various communities in Oxford and Littlemore – especially from those whose voices are less heard. My aim is to weave them together as the basis for a new Latin mass, in which different communities are able to participate. I see the performance of the Littlemore Mass as an assertion of our shared, sacred values of humility, community and compassion, so desperately needed in these uncertain times.
As part of the Littlemore Dreams project, the Littlemore Mass will be performed during our end of year concert on 25th June at 3 pm in the church. If you would like to join in please contact: Malcolm Atkins at Malcolm.firstname.lastname@example.org OR 07872 991287.
Scores are available for download here.
Recordings of the Mass to help with learning will be on the Church Soundcloud area.
Recordings are available for parts of the mass. These have been put together quickly as guides to practice to. All sections will be available soon:
A recording of our concert on 25th June which included the Littlemore Mass (as developed so far) is here

All Rehearsals will be at St Mary & St Nicolas Church
During April and early May we will be trying ideas in the Senzenina singing group and interested choirs will be welcome to either attend or take copies of scores to practice separately – these will be available on-line and recordings will be available for people who are not confident with reading music. Senzenina will meet from 6.15 – 7.30 on:

Wednesday 26th April 6.15 – 7.30
Wednesday 10th May 6.15 – 7.30
Wednesday 17th May 6.15 – 7.30
Then from the 24th May we will rehearse from 7.30-8.30 every Wednesday in the church and go through the mass ready for performing one section at the Holywell Music Room on the 15th June and the full mass at the concert on the 25th June at 3 pm.
Rehearsals will be:
Wednesday 24th May 7.30-8.30
Wednesday 31st May 7.30-8.30
Wednesday 7th June 7.30-8.30
Wednesday 14th June 7.30-8.30
Wednesday 21st June 7.30-8.30
If you want to be in the performance on June 25th you will need to attend at least three of the last four rehearsals.
If you want to be in the performance on the 15th you will need to attend the rehearsals on the 7th and 14th June and also a special rehearsal during the day of the 15th which will be to work with ethno England who are convening the Holywell performance and have invited us to join them. Details will be sent out for this.
If you would like to meet with me as a choir and for me to explain the music to you or your choir leader that can be arranged.
Hannah Powell has kindly offered to conduct both performances which will involve a double choir plus instrumentalists and vocal soloists.
25th June at 3 pm at St Mary and St Nicholas Church
This performance will be part of the Littlemore Hopes and Dreams project.
The performance will start at 3 pm and will include other songs related to hopes and dreams including: Imagine; I have a Dream (Abba); Big Rock Candy Mountain.
If your choir has a song you would like to do that relates to this subject we would be happy to consider putting it in the concert. However, if, as is possible, there is not sufficient time we would be very happy for choirs to sing acapella in the picnic in the beautiful church grounds after the concert.
15th June (evening) at the Holywell Music Room
Ethno England have asked us to perform one movement of the mass with them at their summer concert. If you want to be part of this please say.
