We consider our work with children to be a vital aspect of our ministry. Children have a profound sense of the spiritual and we are constantly exploring news ways of journeying together, enriching each other as people of faith from all ages.
Children are very welcome to all our services. During the main service we have Sunday School for primary age children. There is also an area at the back of the church for little ones to play.
Once a month at 10am we have a Jubilate Service, an all age Eucharist Service, where our children and adults take part in everything. It is informal and interactive and the contents of the service is on powerpoint instead of service sheets and we use instruments instead of the organ.
Every Wednesday morning Rev Margreet, Rev Hannah, or another local minister leads worship for Key Stage 1 and 2 in the John Henry Newman Academy, which involves nearly 300 children and staff. During the year we journey through the Bible, the stories are told with the children as actors. We always pray together the Lord’s prayer and our Littlemore Parish Prayer: ‘Loving Lord, may your shining light fill the hearts of all who live, work and worship here in Littlemore.’ The service is open to everyone in the community.
St Nicholas Festival. At the beginning of December we have our annual St Nicholas Festival. At 4pm we start in the Community Centre with St Nicholas craft activities, songs and refreshments. When it has become dark, we light our lanterns and walk through Littlemore to the Sisters of the Work, the place where John Henry Newman lived for some years. After saying good bye to the sisters we continue our procession through Littlemore and end up in the Church. We leave our shoes in the vestry with a carrot or apple for St Nicholas’ horse, we sing some more songs and hope that St Nicholas comes round with some presents or sweets for the children. Great fun for the whole family!
In the recent past we also offered an after school Godly Play club and we ran a twice monthly Sunday afternoon Fun Church for a number of years. We will let you know about any new initiatives.
There are special children services around Christmas and Easter. Please see other section for dates.
If you have any questions about our children’s work please contact the vicar, the Rev Margreet Armitstead.
